As a business, implementing generative engine optimization (GEO) can seem a little confusing right now.

There are hundreds of GEO tools available, that’s true. However, the category itself is pretty new, so these tools aren’t time tested and don’t have hundreds of reviews available. Waiting around and delaying GEO implementation also isn’t an option.

You need to choose the right AI visibility platform with whatever resources are available: demos, product websites, and direct conversations with the sales/customer support team.

This guide will help you make that choice. In this article, I’ll tell you exactly what you need to check in a GEO tool and also share a checklist so you can choose the right AI visibility platform easily.

How to Choose the Right AI Visibility Platform: What to Consider

Because GEO itself is so new, setting a benchmark to judge a good GEO tool isn’t practical yet. What you can do instead is: list down 5-10 AI visibility tools that you are interested in and check them against each question mentioned below.

Check our list of the top 24 GEO tools to get started.

Functionality

1. Is it a GEO-first or a GEO add-on tool?

Many SEO platforms, like Ahrefs and Semrush, have added a GEO feature to their existing toolkits. If you are mostly focused on SEO and simply want to test the GEO waters, these can be good tools to begin with.

But if you’re serious about GEO, they may not be sufficient. In my experience, they often give incomplete or inaccurate results.

Read our complete Ahrefs Brand Radar review for more info.

For proper GEO implementation, look for tools that have GEO as their central focus. Bonus points if they also have some SEO and content generation features, so you don’t have to invest in multiple tools.

2. Does it cover all AI search engines?

AI visibility isn’t limited to just ChatGPT or AI Overviews. Platforms like Peec AI and AmIOnAI cover just one to three platforms, which isn’t enough if you want to boost visibility across AI engines.

Choose a platform that covers at least four basic AI search engines: ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, and AI Overviews. Even better if it covers more AI platforms like AI Mode, Claude, Grok, Microsoft Copilot, and so on.

3. Is it limited to monitoring only or provides insights and action?

When you’re monitoring AI visibility, you’ll also want to take action and improve AI presence. Make sure the platform proactively suggests the roadmap and gives the tools to implement changes in all three aspects: on-page, off-page, and technical GEO.

Some tools, like AthenaHQ and Profound, identify only content opportunities and also have the content writing tool built in. If you prefer them, make sure to cover the off-page and technical aspects of GEO independently. Or, choose a tool that focuses on all three, like Writesonic.

Prompts

4. How many prompts does the tool let you run?

Prompt limits matter because they control how much visibility data you can collect. In AI search, a single keyword translates into multiple prompts. For example: “best tools for SEO” becomes:

  • Which tools should I choose for search engine optimization?
  • Give me a list of tools that I can use for SEO.
  • SEO software for my startup

Even though the intent is the same, you need to measure visibility across many such variations for all major keywords related to your brand for better accuracy. The more prompts you run, the more accurate the visibility measure is.

Some tools cap you at a small number of prompts, which might only cover branded queries or your highest-volume keywords. So, choose a tool that lets you test at least 50 prompts. The ideal range is between 100-500 prompts every month.

5. How does it determine prompts?

Some tools require you to manually enter every prompt, which can be time-consuming and easy to miss key variations. Others use AI or search data to automatically generate prompt suggestions based on your keywords, competitors, and industry trends.

A good platform should at least give you a starting point by suggesting high-volume, high-intent prompts — and still let you add your own custom ones.

This way, you’re not relying only on what the tool thinks is important, but you also aren’t stuck brainstorming hundreds of prompts yourself.

6. How frequently does it run prompts?

AI results change quickly. If the tool only runs prompts weekly or monthly, you might miss shifts in visibility.

Daily tracking is ideal, especially for competitive or high-value topics. At a minimum, make sure the tool runs the prompts often enough that you can act before competitors take your spot.

7. Does it scrape or use APIs?

There are two ways AI visibility platforms collect data: through APIs and by scraping.

API-based data can miss user-facing elements like exact citations, formatting, and follow-up questions.

Scraping provides a clearer picture of what real users see. Platforms like Writesonic use scraping (or a hybrid approach) to capture accurate, user-facing results.

Data and reporting

8. Does it cover all metrics: AI visibility, mentions, citations, sentiment?

Your tool should track more than just AI appearances. At minimum, look for:

  • AI visibility: how often you show up across prompts.
  • Mentions vs. citations: whether you’re just mentioned or actually linked as a source.
  • Positioning: where your citation appears (top, middle, bottom).
  • Sentiment: whether the answer talks about your brand positively or negatively.
  • AI Traffic: the amount of traffic you are getting from each AI search engine.
  • Trends over time: so you can measure improvements.

These metrics together give you a clear picture of your AI presence and help prioritize fixes.

9. Does it provide competitor insights?

GEO is competitive. Your platform should show which competitors are cited for your target prompts and how often. This helps you spot gaps, benchmark your share of voice, and plan where to win back visibility.

10. Can you export data and reports?

Your team and stakeholders will want to see results. Choose a platform that allows easy data export (CSV, PDF, dashboards), so you can build reports and present them to others.

Security

11. Does it meet enterprise standards?

If you work in a mid-size or large company, security can make or break the deal.

Your GEO platform should meet enterprise-grade requirements like:

  • SOC 2
  • GDPR
  • HIPAA

This ensures your prompts, competitor research, and any customer data are handled securely.

Support

12. How good is the product documentation and knowledge base?

Because GEO is still new, you need more than just “how to use the tool” guides. A good platform should have detailed documentation that explains why certain fixes are recommended, what GEO best practices look like, and how to implement changes step by step.

Comprehensive learning resources save your team time, reduce guesswork, and help you get results faster.

13. How responsive is the support?

It’s hard to know how responsive support is before you commit to a tool. But you can always check what kind of support they promise.

Look for tools that promise priority support. If they have multiple support channels such as email, socials, or chat, that’s even better.

Price

14. Do they provide pricing upfront?

Transparent pricing saves time. You shouldn’t have to sit through a demo just to know whether the tool fits your budget.

Platforms that list pricing clearly on their website make it easier to compare options and make faster decisions.

15. Do they have a free trial?

A free trial lets you see real data before you commit. You can check whether the tool tracks the prompts you care about, whether its coverage is accurate, and if the workflow fits your team.

If there’s no free trial, look for a money-back guarantee or a short-term plan so you can test without locking into a long contract.

16. Does the pricing justify the features?

It’s fine if a tool is expensive as long as the value matches the price. A good platform should save you time, consolidate multiple tools, and actually improve your AI visibility.

Be cautious of tools that charge a “premium” price just because GEO is new or marketed for enterprises without offering more features or better results.
