Why OpenAI’s ChatGPT is not killing Google yet!

Table of contents

Unless you have been living under a rock for the past two weeks, it was impossible to miss the coverage of OpenAI’s biggest launch yet ChatGPT.

Within a week it crossed over 1 million users as announced by OpenAI’s CEO Sam Altman. Twitter walls were full of people experimenting with ChatGPT.

If you are still new to ChatGPT then this is the first question I asked to it as well.

What is ChatGPT?

ChatGPT is a variant of the GPT-3 language model that has been optimized for conversational text. ChatGPT is designed to generate human-like responses to the text input in a way that is similar to a conversation. Because it is a variant of GPT-3, it is also a large, powerful language model that has been trained on a vast amount of text data. ChatGPT is capable of understanding and responding to a wide range of inputs and can provide helpful and informative answers to many questions.

In the same breath, it is equally important to know what are the limitations and things ChatGPT can’t do and explore various ChatGPT alternatives in the market.

What are the things ChatGPT can’t do?

As a language model, ChatGPT is not capable of performing actions or carrying out tasks. It is purely a tool for generating text, and it does not have any inherent capabilities beyond its ability to generate human-like responses to text inputs.

Additionally, because it is a large, pre-trained model, ChatGPT is not able to learn or adapt to new information beyond what it was trained on. This means that it may not be able to provide accurate or up-to-date answers to questions about current events or rapidly changing topics. Finally, because it is a language model, it is not capable of browsing the internet or accessing external information, so it is limited to using the information it was trained on to generate responses. It must be emphasized that ChatGPT has been educated using data from 2021 and earlier, and does not have access to details from 2022. Moreover, ChatGPT is incapable of creating visuals and responding to vocal instructions.

Do you still think ChatGPT is a Google killer?

Now the most important question - Can ChatGPT replace google?

Well, let me start with a real-life example that I experienced within the team which answered this question for me. When an intern tried to use it, to do their assignment. This reminded me of my university days when without google most of us would have struggled. This clearly was easily and swiftly replaced by ChatGPT.

ChatGPT - Google Killer?

Here is another example where a user asked Google and ChatGPT questions on the differential equations and ChatGPT blew google out of the water.

Now, who better to answer this question than ChatGPT itself?

However, based on a recent Greylock interview I saw with Reid Hoffman and Sam Altman (OpenAI CEO) discuss this limitation of not having the latest information is something they will be able to resolve in near future. I think we will have models that continuously learn, right now if you use GPT it’s sort of stuck in time that it was trained and the more you use it it doesn’t get any better and all of that I think will change.

The data accuracy will still remain a harder problem to solve regardless of GPT models, google, Wikipedia or even news channels.

The future of large language models like ChatGPT is uncertain. While it may be able to provide useful answers to some questions, it is not yet capable of replacing search engines like Google for all use cases or we can say that ChatGPT is never going to be a Google killer. However, as these models continue to develop and improve, they may become more capable and may be able to provide answers to more complex questions. It is likely that the progress of these models will accelerate in the coming years.

Is ChatGPT trying to go after google?

Yes, it is clear that is where OpenAI’s is aiming to be with Sam’s quote from the interview below, that they are going after disrupting google. Now whether OpenAI manages to do it or some other company or Google themselves - remains to be seen!

I don’t think we’ve yet seen the kind of like people who go after the trillion dollar like take on Google’s and I think that’s about to happen. Maybe it’ll be successful maybe Google will do it themselves but I would guess that with the quality of language models we’ll see in the coming years. You know there will be a serious challenge to Google for the first time for a search product and I think people are really starting to think about like how did the fundamental things change and that’s going to be really powerful — Sam Altman

Where is AI development heading in the future, for AI startups?

With OpenAI becoming more and more user-friendly and easily accessible by end users. If you don't have millions of dollars to do your own R&D and build this support everything kind of few know big Ai models, how would you survive? Well the good news is that the Generative Ai space is just getting started there is less than single-digit market penetration and use cases increasing day by day there is no end in sight on what could be done.

However in order to survive this competitive industry here are a few ways one can differentiate and even become a unicorn in space of Ai startups.

Differentiation on the middle layer

It is likely that there will be a small number of fundamental large language models that other people will build upon in the future. At present, companies make large language model APIs and other people build on top of them. There will also be a middle layer that becomes important in the future which is deeper domain details. Whether it's coding, content creation, medical diagnosis, and so forth.

For example services like Writesonic, Rytr, Jasper, and Copy.ai are some of those middle-layer services that create a simpler but even deeper layer of differentiation that look at multiple AI models and their own data sets to create specialized expertise in certain domains.

Writesonic launched their own version of Chatsonic which not only uses ChatGPT, but also the power of Google, Stability AI, and their own proprietary models to supercharge its results. Here is an example below -

Multimodal models

It is likely that multimodal models will allow for the combination of video, voice, and data in a way that can solve real, substantive problems. GPT-3 and ChatGPT are impressive and can generate interesting responses to simple questions, but they may not be able to provide precise answers to more complex questions. When these models can provide accurate answers with a high degree of certainty, they will become valuable.

However, we are not yet at a point where these models can do that consistently. OpenAI necessarily won’t be the clear winner in all we already see that will Stability AI being better than Dalle-2 in many aspects. Hence, a multimodal model which allows simple integration and or seamless interaction between these AI models would be key.

We have already seen this kind of middle-layer applications like Zapier and Mulesoft in other industries, each of which already has become a multi-billion dollar company.

Model as a service

It is likely that all of these models as a service will become commoditized in the future. The real value will lie in finding proprietary sources of data that can be used to train these models on all these different domains. Machine learning and AI can be broken down into two components: training and inference.

Training involves learning from data, while inference involves using the model to generate output in real-time.

The key to success in this field will be identifying unique and proprietary sources of data that can be used to train the models.

For example, a company that builds a model to detect tumors may gain a competitive advantage by vertically integrating and gaining access to patient data that is unique to them. However, while ChatGPT is an interesting example of a language model, it is not yet capable of solving the most complex and challenging problems. It will take time and continued development to reach that level of capability.

IBM’s Watson, Google’s LaMDA, and many other probably already does what ChatGPT does and more however the popularity of OpenAI is its easy accessibility and applicability by being relevant as well as easy to use for non-technical users.

Conclusion

OpenAI’s latest language model, ChatGPT, has received a great deal of attention since its release. The model is a variant of GPT-3 that has been optimized for generating human-like responses to text input. It is a large, powerful model that has been trained on a vast amount of text data and is capable of understanding and responding to a wide range of inputs.

However, it has several limitations, including its inability to adapt to new information or carry out tasks. It is also not able to browse the internet or access external information. In some ways, it's like desktops pre-internet it has its capabilities and uses. However, once ChatGPT is connected to the latest information on the internet and processes data in real-time it can truly become boundless.

While ChatGPT may be able to provide useful answers to some questions, it is not yet capable of replacing search engines like Google for all use cases. It is likely that the progress of these models will accelerate in the coming years, but it remains to be seen whether they will actually be able to disrupt Google’s dominance in the search market.
