ChatGPT ads tracking is live in Writesonic as of this week. On every tracked prompt, you can now see:
- Which prompts triggered a sponsored placement
- Which brand won it
- How paid presence maps against your organic visibility on the same prompt
- How placements move week over week as more advertisers join the auction
The same dashboard also captures Google AI Overviews ads, so you’re measuring paid visibility across both AI answer surfaces in one place. Filter to ChatGPT-only when that’s where you need to look first, or keep both on to compare how Google and OpenAI are monetizing the same prompts. No other AI visibility tool ships this today.
We moved fast for one reason. The surface isn’t waiting.
Why now
OpenAI started testing ads inside ChatGPT on February 9, 2026. Six weeks later, the pilot was running at a $100M+ annualized run rate, per Reuters. OpenAI has told investors it expects $2.5B in ad revenue by the end of 2026 and $102B by 2030.
If you buy paid media, that’s the whole reason to start tracking today. A new ad surface at $100M run-rate with a $2.5B target inside ten months is not a Q3 problem.
What’s live on ChatGPT today
- Live in the US on ChatGPT Free and Go tiers since February 9, 2026.
- Criteo is the first ad-tech partner, announced March 2, 2026. That brings roughly 17,000 advertisers and $4B in annual media spend into ChatGPT.
- Self-serve is in limited testing. Minimum spend has dropped from $250,000 to $50,000. Bid range is $3 to $5 per click. Three formats so far: sponsored answer cards inline with the response, product spotlights with shopping carousels and checkout, and contextual sidebar placements.
- OpenAI moved from a $60 CPM to a CPC model after the CPM eroded in ten weeks.
- Criteo’s early read: LLM-referred traffic converts at roughly 1.5x other channels. One-month sample, 500 US retailers. Directional. Don’t build a plan on one data point.
The Google AI Overviews impact
Google is further along than ChatGPT. AI Overviews are already on ~48% of tracked queries:
- Ads now appear on roughly 25.5% of AI Overview results, up from about 3% in January 2025. A 394% year-over-year jump.
- AI Overviews themselves show on ~48% of tracked queries as of February 2026, up from ~31% a year earlier.
- Organic CTR on AI Overview queries dropped 61%. Paid CTR dropped 68%.
- Cross-industry Search CPC hit $2.96 in Q1 2026, up 12% YoY. AI Overviews are part of the reason. They’re shifting budget from organic into paid.
- Ad placements can appear above the AI Overview, below it, or inline inside the summary. Ads in AI Mode (Google’s conversational search, now at 75M DAU) are in US testing, with wider access expected by mid-2026.
If you run paid search today, you’re already paying AI Overviews CPCs. You just may not be tagging them that way. Knowing which impressions are AI Overview placements versus classic SERP is step one to knowing what you’re actually paying for.
CPCs will not stay this cheap
In 2002, an AdWords click cost pennies. By 2008, the same placements were $20 and up. Brands that built a paid search muscle early compounded that advantage for fifteen years. The ones that waited paid to rent back the visibility they could have owned cheap.
ChatGPT is at the pennies stage now. Thin auctions, self-serve still invite-only. The day OpenAI opens self-serve to everyone and Criteo’s 17,000 advertisers start bidding on inventory, the economics flip.
Learn this surface now and you’ll be buying 2026 CPCs for the next two years. Wait, and you’ll be paying 2028 rates on the same placements.
Why organic-only tracking stopped being enough
Until this quarter, AI visibility tracking meant three things: mentions, citations, and competitor share of answer. Those still matter.
The new layer is paid. A user asking ChatGPT about streaming sticks, phone plans, or firewalls can see a sponsored brand placed above the organic answer. If your dashboard only tracks mentions and citations, you’re missing the first thing the user sees.
How to use it
Inside Writesonic:
- Open the All Answers page.
- Click the filter button (top of the table).
- Choose Ads → Triggered.
You’ll see every tracked answer where an ad ran. If you only want ChatGPT placements, apply the model filter and select ChatGPT.
One caveat. Ad volume is still low. OpenAI is rolling the surface out slowly. It’s mostly US-only. Coverage will climb as more regions open and more advertisers onboard through Criteo and the self-serve beta. What you see this month is a floor. Watch how it moves week over week.
Start tracking now
You can’t reverse-engineer a new ad surface from screenshots on X. You can from a running stream of your own tracked prompts, with competitors labeled and placements dated.
That’s what we shipped. Start tracking this quarter and you’ll see the auction form in real time. Leave it for next year, and you’ll be reading about the new CPCs in someone else’s 2027 write-up.
