Which Sources Influence AI Answers? 2,000+ Brand Study

Sources Influencing AI Answers

A mention on Reddit makes a brand 3.17x more likely to appear in an AI-generated answer. A mention on YouTube, 3.19x. Gartner, 3.15x.

A mention on your own website? 1.30x. Below a marketplace listing on Amazon (1.46x). Below Wikipedia (1.42x). The weakest signal we measured across 14 sources and more than 2,000 brands.

Most brands spend the bulk of their content budget on their own site. That budget feeds the channel with the lowest measured influence on whether AI includes them in an answer.

The 14 sources that move AI answer visibility across every category

These sources both lift and hold across hundreds of independent brands.

Ranking 14 citation sources by Influence Lift on AI answer visibility, from YouTube at 3.19x to Wikipedia at 1.42x.

Community, video, professional review, and analyst sources cluster at the top. People compare and evaluate products in their own words on these platforms. AI models weight that signal differently than a brand's own marketing copy.

Reddit covers 1,984 of the 2,007 brands in our sample. Near-universal reach, with a 3.17x lift. YouTube is a fraction higher on lift (3.19x) with fewer brands citing it (1,432). Gartner sits at 3.15x but covers 625 brands, concentrated in B2B.

High lift on a thin sample is a trap

Citation Influence Lift vs source breadth across 2,000+ brands. Niche sources in red cluster left. Universal lifters in blue sit upper right.

We plotted every source by how many brands cite it against its influence lift. The pattern is immediate.

Some sources post lifts of 4x, 5x, higher. They cover a handful of brands. Sites like faz.net or weartesters.com show massive lift on a thin sample. If you sell running shoes, weartesters.com matters. If you sell anything else, it doesn't exist for you.

The sources worth building around sit in the upper right of the chart: high lift and high breadth. A 5x lift on 50 brands is a curiosity. A 3x lift on 1,984 brands is a channel.

Your own website is the weakest citation signal for AI answers

Comparing citation influence by source type. Universal lifters 3.18x, B2B reviews 2.40x, Marketplaces 1.46x, Own website 1.30x.

Brands pour most of their content effort into their own sites. Blog posts, landing pages, product pages. An AI answer that cites a page on your own domain mentioning your brand raises your odds of appearing by 1.30x. That's it.

A mention on a universal lifter delivers 3.18x. A B2B review platform like G2 or Capterra delivers 2.40x. Amazon delivers 1.46x. Your site comes in last.

Your website isn't irrelevant. You need it. But it's the floor, not where the compounding happens. The brands showing up in AI answers are the ones people discuss on Reddit threads, YouTube reviews, Gartner reports, and G2 comparisons.

Citation frequency and citation influence are different questions

Most published research on AI citations measures how often each source gets cited. Wikipedia tops those lists on ChatGPT. Reddit shows up at 1-2% of total citations. Those numbers tell you where AI goes for information. They don't tell you which sources move brands into answers.

We measured the second question. The ranking flips.

Wikipedia is one of the most-cited domains across every AI engine. Its influence lift is 1.42x, near the bottom of our list. It gets cited all the time but barely moves brands. Reddit gets cited far less often but delivers 3.17x lift when it does. YouTube, same pattern: modest citation share, 3.19x influence.

The distinction matters for resource allocation. If you optimize for citation frequency, you chase Wikipedia and Forbes. If you optimize for citation influence, you chase Reddit, YouTube, and Gartner. Different strategies, different outcomes.

Applying this to your AI visibility strategy

If your GEO playbook starts and ends with your own site, you're putting effort into a 1.3x channel while 3x channels sit untouched.

Start with the universal lifters. Community, video, professional review, analyst, and editorial sources convert mentions into AI visibility at 2 to 3x, and they do it across categories. If you're not working to get discussed on Reddit, reviewed on G2, or covered by analysts, those are the channels to prioritize.

Weight every opportunity by reach and lift together. A 5x lift on a handful of brands is a quirk. Reach-backed lift is a strategy.

Rebalance away from owned content. Your website underperforms marketplace listings for answer presence. The brands that show up in AI answers tend to be the ones people discuss in places those brands don't control.

Build the source map per category. The universal list is the base layer. Each vertical has its own trusted sources on top.

Open questions

Does lift vary by engine? We haven't broken this down by ChatGPT vs. Perplexity vs. Gemini yet. Early signal says yes. Next study.

Does recency matter on high-lift sources? We haven't crossed citation lifespan with influence lift yet.

Causality. The lift numbers are directional. They tell you where to focus. They don't guarantee that one Reddit mention triples your visibility overnight.

Methodology

Sample: 2,000+ brands across every major category. For each AI-generated answer, we identified all cited pages, detected brand mentions within each page, and tracked whether the mentioned brand appeared in the answer text.

Influence Lift compares a brand's probability of surfacing when a source mentions it versus when it doesn't, isolating the source effect from brand size, topic, and query type.

Inclusion threshold: sources cited by 600+ of the 2,000+ brands. Low-quality automated statistics aggregators excluded. Domains normalized to registered form (docs.aws.amazon.com maps to amazon.com).
